Last month brought me a recurring theme that I want to share with you. I’ve begun channeling The Rolling Stones. Specifically the lyrics, “You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometime, you just might find, you get what you need…”

I know. Weird. Why am I singing lyrics from The Rolling Stones to people? Well, I’ll tell you. See, it turns out that this past month has brought many stories of something not working out or of one of life’s inevitable, unexpected curveballs. And each time I listened to these stories, I found myself singing those infamous lines.
The thing is – we have no way of knowing what is coming down the road for us. And sometimes whatever does show up looks strange, or even feels stressful at first. But as we take the time to get to know the situation, practice kindness, love and sincerity, we often find that indeed, it is in fact just what we need. Even if we’re not happy about it at the time.
“Every intention, every achievement has come out of dissatisfaction, not serenity. No one ever said ‘things are perfect. Let’s invent fire!’– Fran Lebowitz
Maybe your boss just let you go and it wasn’t on your timeline – but you get an even better job the next week (or pour yourself into your side business). Maybe your soul mate showed up in a different package than you thought they would – and you had to get past the expectation to see that they really were the one. Or maybe a relationship ended that you really wanted – because there was someone better for you out there. Maybe you have struggled over the past few years financially but it’s taught you how to unite your family and remember how to live on less. Whatever the case may be, our lessons from these moments become the backbone of who we are.
People and events come into our lives to teach us something. And the more we resist, push back and insist on what we have pictured in our minds, the more we overlook the subtle people and events in our periphery that are fighting to take the center stage. What’s the worst that could happen? When we give the uncomfortable a chance, try something new and push ourselves into unfamiliar territory, we test the water. These changes are not necessarily permanent (unless we decide to make them so). But they might just be exactly what you’re looking for.
Open your eyes. Take a lesson from The Rolling Stones. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Explore all options. Remove expectation. Focus on the feeling behind what you really want. Not the way it will show up. And if you try sometime, you just might find…you get what you need.
Have a story about getting exactly what you needed, even though it’s not what you were asking for? Share it with me!
