Working a job to pay the bills helps you keep a roof over your head and food on your table, but it might not offer anything beyond that. Finding a job that you really love can have a big impact on your life, from boosting your self-confidence to improving your outlook on life in general. Knowing how to land a job you’re passionate about takes some effort, but it’s well worth it in the long run.
Understanding Your Passion
Getting to know what you’re passionate about can steer you in the right direction. Keep in mind that your skillset won’t necessarily match up with what you’re passionate about. Having a talent for something won’t provide you with much satisfaction or a rewarding work experience if you don’t have a strong interest in it. In other words, just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you WANT to.
Think about what you would spend all or most of your time doing, and you’ll be on your way to discovering your true passion. Once you know what this passion is, you can figure out how to put your skills to use toward creating a career out of it.
Networking
The online job application process offers convenience, but it’s hard to stand out from the competition. Instead of having your online resume blend in with the rest of the pile, use personal networking to your advantage. When you know what you’re passionate about in terms of a job or career, you can reach out to people who can help you make connections. For example, look for local events or organizations that relate to your passion in order to start connecting to people. Networking doesn’t always have to be business cards and suits.
Know Your Strengths, Skills, and Talents
Getting to know yourself is just as important as understanding your passion. Think about what you’re really good at and what you could improve on. Be honest with yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask people you know for feedback on these areas, so you’ll be able to determine your biggest strengths and drawbacks. You may also have strengths that you don’t acknowledge within yourself because they come so naturally to you. Having outside feedback can help you figure out your greatest talents and skills that you might need for your ideal job.
Gain Experience
Your dream job might not happen overnight. That’s why it’s important to work on gaining experience a little at a time. This might involve taking a job that helps you move toward your goal, even if it’s entry-level for right now. Taking a step back can help you gain momentum forward, so you can end up with a job you’re truly passionate about.
Never Too Old to Start Over
What if you discover that your passion requires you to start over, such as learning new skills, going back to school or doing a completely different type of job than what you’re used to? The good news is that you’re never too old to start over. If you pass up the opportunity to start working toward a job that reflects your passion, you’re likely to regret it even more in the future if you continue to put it off. Don’t be afraid to make a change!
